Nature
lovers couldn’t find a better place to visit than our Middle Peninsula.
With acres of tidal marshes and wetlands, Mathews is a haven for aquatic
birds of all kinds, as well as a popular over-wintering site for migratory
birds like Canadian geese. The Bethel Beach Nature Preserve is also home to
many of the rarer shorebirds in our region.

| Picture to be added here. | Several different crab and fish species also live in and around the peninsula, including the delicious blue crab. |
| Mathews is also home to several interesting species of frogs, toads, and salamanders for all those herpetological enthusiasts, including the endangered barking tree frog and the musical spring peeper. Between kayaking and boating trips through the marshes, chartered from William’s Wharf and Gwynn’s Island, bird watching from various lookout points, and enjoying the simple pleasure of a day by the water, there’s always something to do in Mathews. |
| As for history buffs, Mathews has plenty to see. Formed in 1791, Mathews was originally a busy shipbuilding and trading port. It remains home to a strong fishing and crabbing industry. Besides exhibits commemorating Mathews’ maritime history, museums like the Gwynn’s Island Museum also display many artifacts showing our county’s involvement in the Civil War. Capt. Sally Tompkins, the only female officer in the Confederacy, was born and lived right here in Mathews County. |
